Other Efforts: Enhancement of Water-Table and Water-Quality Monitoring

The objective of this work is to provide short-term direction and guidance to Afghanistan to develop a basic early-warning function for water table and well level trends and conditions. The University of Califonia Santa Barbara Geography Department in coordination with the USGS is assisting Afghanistan in developing a water-table and well monitoring system.

Other Efforts: Enhancement of Water-Table and Water-Quality Monitoring

Tasks include:

  • Project direction and guidance.
  • Collaborative efforts carried out in partnership with technical experts in Afghanistan.
  • Creation of a technical geographic information system (GIS) database development carried out by graduate students at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

As part of this effort the UCSB, Afghan Geological Survey, and USGS colleagues visited Ghazni a city in the Helmand Valley to verify DACAARs efforts in this Afghan town and provide oversight on the Arsenic analyses that are being done. This town has been impacted by high Arsenic concentrations in its drinking water supply.
